Green Anole Standoff!

As I was strolling about the yard today, I caught sight of 2 Anoles in a standoff. They were slowly circling each other and displaying their dewlaps (that pink fan of skin on their necks) to each other in what I would guess was a territorial display of some type. They were both on the brick wall of the house, and so had changed to a brownish color to match their surroundings.

Here they are circling again, and there is also a third Anole that I couldn't get in the photo just to below and to the right - maybe the third was a female and they were fighting over her?

Anyhow, this guy seems to have won out (he was the biggest one) and is now King of the brick wall:

I love having the anoles around - never was there for a duel, however! Nice catch, Lee17.

You should put little voice bubbles on them! I can just imagine what they are saying to each other. We have two green anoles that live on the fence by the A/C but I think they are mates - they seem much friendlier than these two guarded critters on your post.

I always enjoy seeing these and other lizards while we bird in TX. What fun it would be to have your very own anoles in your garden.

Annie,

Yes, and a grand duel it was too!

Diana,

They do need voice bubbles! Something Medieval-y maybe.. ;)

Bonnie,

Exactly! I see them in the pet stores sometimes, and I think to myself how much happier they would be running free in my yard ;)

Augh, how adorable! Every time I go to turn over my compost a little anole comes scuttling out, irritated that I just destroyed his home. I have not had the privilege to watch a standoff, though, much less capture one in photographs! How delightful :3
