As I was strolling through my garden, what did I see?

Several of my fall-planted bulbs looking at me! Check it out - the bulbs I dropped in the ground this fall are poking up through the earth:

Southern Grape Hyacinths:



Hoop Petticoats:



Narcissus:



Leucojum:



Byzantine Glads:



They think it is spring already! Silly bulbs. Shhhh - don't tell them it is still Winter, they might go back into hiding...

    Oooh, I haven't heard of a few of these bulbs. I can't wait to see what they look like when they finally start blooming!

    I have never heard of hoop petticoats. Must look them up. Have you used gravel as a mulch?

    I will be sure to take photos when they bloom. I hope they all bloom anyway - sometimes when I put in new bulbs, it takes a couple years to get flowers.

    Lancashire rose,

    Hoop petticoats are itty-bitty narcissus native to the Mediterranian. They are supposed to naturalize well in the South, so I am giving them a go. I hope mine bloom this year.

    And yes, I use gravel as a mulch all over the place. I tried wood mulch when I first moved in, but quickly found that the rain washed it right away in most spots, so I switched to gravel and now it stays put! Plus, I noticed the armadillos tend to leave the gravel mulched areas alone. I guess it is to rough on their soft little noses!
