Gah! I have been attacked....

...by the evil Squash Borer! Witness the evil beasties:

and the destruction they have wrought upon my zucchini plant:

My zuchinni plant wasn't looking so hot - leaves turning a sickly yellow - and upon inspection I found that one of my plants had been invaded by the Squash borer. The Horror! I frantically dug them out, but I fear it may be too late for this particular plant. I still have 2 Apparently uninfested plants left - daily monitering will henceforth commence ('cause I am sure they are there - I just can't see them).

Evil, nefarious Squash-Vine Borer!

(thanks to University of Kentucky Entomology for the pic).

  1. Those borers are evil! I didn't even plant any squash or zucchini this year because I was sick of dealing with them. Hope you manage to save your other plants.

  2. Ugh. Worms. Why does it always have to be worms?

(Why yes, I've been rewatching some Indiana Jones, why do you ask?)

My fingers are crossed for your other two squash plants!

  3. Our zucchini plant was murdered before I knew what was going on. Dang bugs! I hope your remaining plants survive.

  4. Vertie,

They are SO evil! I can see why you didn't want to deal with them. I seem to be keeping my plants alive with daily checking for that evil borer.

  5. Lori,

I know! Worms/grubs are gross! All squishy and fat - I can't believe they are a delicacy in some parts of the world. Eee-yew.

  6. Susannah,

Sorry to hear of the demise of your plants! My other two plants seem to be doing alright - they keep churnin' out the zucchini.

  7. I too am dealing with those little killers. My big plant and another were attacked. I did some surgery on them and killed the worms. Unfortunately, they are weak from it and they droop during the heat of the day. The zuchs are turning yellow and not growing. Still have one that is untouched, but it's not producing yet.
